My World - Groundhog days

Here are some shots of our resident groundhog that lives in a hole (actually several holes connected by tunnels) in the field behind our house. The first two shot were taken in October from inside when he scampered to the neighbors yard to grab an apple and sat in the sun enjoying his meal. Then he climbed up the tree to pose for a face shot. Then two weeks ago I spotted him wandering out in the winter wheat. As he headed back to the hole near the fence, he kept an eye to the sky where two turkey vultures were circling at the far end of the field.

Odd shots - Out on a limb

On New Year's Day I glanced out my window to see this odd sight. One of the neighbor's cats was high up in our dogwood; one squirrel was on the ground and another on the fence post. A moment later, the squirrel on the post was up high taunting the cat. After a few minutes, the disappointed stalker climbed down and walked away.

Odd shots - Bird seed thief

I caught this bird seed thief in action at my brother-in-law's house in June. He just climbed the metal pole, jumped to the feeder and had a snack.

Window Views - Window separation

Only the window separates these two from a good chase! The squirrels have demonstrated they are much faster than the neighborhood cats. (Ours are indoor cats and only get to watch, and perchance to dream of catching the squirrel.)

Odd shots - Odd eyes?

It was odd to see the neighbors walking a goat in the street in front of our house. And I thought the slit in the eye odd. Marianne posted the story behind the goat.

My World Tuesday - Furry critters

These two Siamese mix cats we invited to stay back in 2001. They were found a the Siamese Rescue in Virginia. They take an interest on what's going on outside. Here's the object of their interest.

With oak trees in every yard, we have quite a few squirrels around. They had no problem finding acorns in the snow.

About two weeks ago, I spotted this guy peering at me as I was taking some pictures of the sunset. There are a lot of dogs in the neighborhood (and leash laws), but I had never seen this one. He looked a bit and then wandered off to the left.

And last year we had several visits from deer.

PhotoHunt - Furry creatures

Zoey is our furry, female Siamese mix who stays inside with us. And below is one of the several furry squirrels that feed on the acorns in our yard. He is having a snack as light snow fell.

PhotoHunt - Squirrel watch together

Our two cats don't spend as much time together as they did in their younger years, but when the birds or squirrels are out and about, the cats watch with interest. And here is the object of their interest.

PhotoHunt - revisited

Again Marianne spotted the deer visiting. They came into our neighbor's yard. They look like young ones who are foraging without mama deer. They stayed quite awhile, nibbling grass, checking out the tree and trying to decide if they could get over the fence to our yard. These shots were taken through my rear window. See Mariane's Project 365 for another shot.

PhotoHunt - Field of wild deer

Last March I spotted these deer in a pasture near where we recycle stuff. I believe that some of this herd are the ones we occasionally spot in the field behind our house.

Squirrel and tree

Last Saturday, I pulled in the driveway and this little guy was digging in the yard. I got out of the van with my camera and walked to the back and took a few shots. He saw me and jumped to the tree and looked around the other side to see what I was doing. He then slithered down the tree.

And then looked back up to see if this was his tree.

Morning sightings

This morning I spotted a crow perched at the highest point of one of the trees. The blue jays eventually chased it away. And then I spotted two deer bouncing across the wheat field, heading towards the creek.

Cats on watch . . . .

. . . . for the bushy-tailed nut thief.
