PhotoHunt - Mostly black reflection

When I shot the sun sparkling on Carroll Creek, I got a mostly black image, with dark shadows of the trees and a few bright spots.

My World Tuesday - Fountain by the creek

Along Carroll Creek in the center of Frederick, there are a number of places to buy a beverage of your choice. But there is one place to get free water. The Diehl Memorial Fountain commerates a 1911 fountain which honored Marie Diehl, the founder of the Frederick SPCA. This one also serves people and their pets, though not horses.

Sky Watch Friday - Saturday skies

Blue sky and clouds reflected in blue Chevelle

Reflected sky
I take a shot of this building almost every time I walk by. Our sky had lots of clouds interspersed with bright blue. Usually we have hazy, smoggy skies in late summer but cooler weather pushed through and we got a pleasant end to our summer.

My World Tuesday - Water and more water

Last Thursday we had several inches of rain as the storm that covered the eastern US went over us. Above is the view friday morning from our yard of the Israel Creek. Normally it is on the far side of the flood plain and cannot be seen from our house. Below is the Monocacy River not far from us. This is the place where I found the hawks on December 3 (posted for SWF).

And here is Carroll Creek near where it empties into the Monocacy. The white on the far side on the water is where the creek normally flows.

And finally, the view Saturday morning from our house of the receding water. From what I heard, no significant damage was caused by this flood in Frederick.

My World Tuesday - Community Bridge

The city of Frederick was originally laid out along Carroll Creek. Over the years this creek flooded and after severe flooding in the 1970's, the city began planning for a flood control project and redevelopment of the damaged areas along the creek. The flood control project consisted of large underground conduits for excess floodwater and a park along the creek. One highlight of the plan was a community bridge to replace the old Carroll Street Bridge over the creek. The view above is the east side of the bridge. Below is a shot of the bridge where it meets an old building, now the Delaplaine arts center.

The bridge is concrete with a painted mural looking like a stone bridge with various elements of community life painted on the stone blocks. Below are some of the symbols included in the mural. For more information on the bridge see its web site. I have previously posted other photos on my blogs here Bridges Between, a view from the bridge and the fountain.

Sky Watch Friday - Reflected sky

This time of the year we get hazy, hot days and not too many photogenic skies. Last Sunday was a little better and we took our grandsons into town. Carroll Creek runs through the Frederick business district. After a major flood in 1976, the city build a flood control system to carry the excess water under the brick walk ways on either side of the creek. The area along the creek was redeveloped with new housing on the right and offices, restaurants and shops on the left. The creek provides some nice reflections of the buildings and skies. The lights along the creek also make a nice photo subject. You can see more of our day at the creek and Baker Park on Marianne's blog and my other blog.

More library photos

The first two photos were taken from the top of the parking garage on Jan 8, 2008. The part of the library seen here was a new addition, completed in 2002. In the picture below, the let part of the library was renovated, adding the curved roof and windows. The tower contains the spiral stair case between floors.

Below is the main entrance tower, as seen from creek side;

and a view of the library from the amphitheater across Carroll Creek.

For more library photos, see Marianne's and my posts of April 16.
